About the Book
My visit to Afghanistan in May 2005 was on behalf of ImagineAsia, the non-profit organization I co-founded, whose mission was to provide education and healthcare assistance to rural Asian communities. Afghanistan was chosen as our pilot project. As the executive director, my objective was to work with the Ministry of Education in Kabul and fulfill their mandate to select the schools in the Waras District that would qualify for our program. Waras is an eight-hour drive southwest from Kabul nestled in the Surb Koh Mountains. Specifically, one of the poorest areas in the country, the villages I visited were a further two days walk into the mountains, and since inaccessible by car, I traveled on horseback. Later, I learned that due to the region’s incredible isolation I was the first foreigner to visit these villages that neither the Taliban nor the Russians ever occupied. For 5 days I meet with the local village elders, the teachers and students to begin the school’s program of support. As a photographer I was on a personal mission to document the real Afghanistan for my Peace Caravan Project. The following photographic essay illustrates my journey and shows the remarkable, resilient and spirited people of Afghanistan.
The Peace Caravan Project follows my solo journey along the ancient trading routes to document places of historical and religious significance mentioned in the Bible, the Torah, the Koran and the Vedas. It is a quest to explore my personal heritage, spirituality and the connection to Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. I am optimistic that by sharing photographs and stories from my travels that readers will find a new appreciation for the religious and cultural heritages of these nations and that a new way to peace will reveal itself. Thus the Peace Caravan Project endeavors to inform and inspire others to achieve understanding, respect, and acceptance necessary for world peace.
