About the Book
Landscape photographs by Icelandic filmmaker Jon Gustafsson. Through his areal photography Jon manages to skillfully, elegantly and masterfully portray the many monumental presences within the Icelandic landscape as well as do perfect justice to the more subtle nuances that can be found within this enigmatic landscape that is his subject.
It doesn’t take long for Jon Gustafsson’s photographs to work their magic, and for their intrinsic value to effortlessly draw the viewer in. The exact location, the circumstance or indeed the subject matter in detail is of no importance nor is there any reason to demystify the work with such trivia. The work is ethereal, intriguing and electric; seducing the viewer into wanting to know more, and to turning the page.
Recurring patterns in nature reveal themselves playfully within the work, unravel even, with yet a gravitas that cannot be ignored. Gustafsson’s work captures the unique breathe of Iceland. The work stands confidently on its own, although the photographer’s short accounts on how the photographs were conceived adds a fascinating dimension to it. Iceland is surreal, it is dynamic and ultimately, as Gustafsson eloquently points out: It is a work of art.
