About the Book
Multi-Bodies
Paintings by Evan Goldman
My "Multi-Bodies" series explores the concept of dual identities personified by life size portraits that juxtapose a clothed figure with smaller images of their nude self. The tension between the clothed figure and their nude selves represents the duality within us.
Though society wants us to be clothed, I depict people who stand proudly in front of images of their bodies. My work promotes positive body image and includes women and men of varied ethnicities. By showing an array of different people, I challenge myself to realistically depict the subjects and reveal their personalities.
My greatest influences are Flemish and Dutch portrait painters, such as Van Dyke, Rubens, and Rembrandt. I am also inspired by the “Photographic Studies of Motion” by Eadweard Muybridge. The unusual placement of the life size clothed figures and multiple nude figures in my “Multi-Bodies” series presents a unique voice within the figurative art world.
