About the Book
Two years and six months… This is the time I have been in the Philippines as I write these lines! Fourteen immigration stamps later, I am still on Luzon Island extending my stay into semi permanency to enjoy the constant warm weather and the quiet invite of the Filipino people. I am not sure if this book will do them justice. Learning about people is difficult and arduous and the Filipino are very prude and secretive about themselves, very rarely opening their true feelings, especially to us, occidentals. One has to rely on reading books, self-research and at times pure intuition, in order to piece together their everyday life puzzle and understand the very painful revolutionary past that constitutes, still today, the core ingredient of these unique islanders. As I have not travelled across the full span of its complex geography of 7000 islands, the book concentrates solely on the main island of Luzon, home to a vast proportion of the Philippine’s 100+ million souls. This album should be an excellent coffee table reference document that will give the reader an agreeable insight into a country, still today seen as a faraway land of mystery, often with some pejorative undertones; it’s people having established footholds in every possible country in the world, humbly showing how hard and patiently they can serve others. The book should also help demystify many preconceived ideas held by most occidentals, about these very unusual islanders. I wish to my readers that this learning tour will be a profitable and enjoyable one. Filipino people certainly deserve whatever time you may devote to them here and now, until that day you can place on your calendar, a personal visit to these charming islands!
