      About the Book

      Edit

All photos in this book were taken on the first day of February 2022 from a passenger window on Southwest Airlines Flight 0133 going from Lambert International Airport in St Louis to LaGuardia Airport in New York. Soon after takeoff the plane entered the clouds and remained above them until western Ohio. From there to New York the sky was mostly clear. The ground was covered with partially melted snow, which made the patterns on the ground stand out. The varied terrain included the flat grids of farmland in western Ohio; the streets of the city of Akron; the mountains of western Pennsylvania; a quarry, a solar farm, and a trotting track in west central New Jersey; the blue of the bay off the Jersey shore; and the urban layout of Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan with the bridges across the East River. In some pictures, the site is clearly identifiable. In others the landscape takes on the look of an abstract design. The photographer took pains to match each image to Google Maps to determine its precise location. These locations are given in the photo captions along with the precise time to indicate the movement of the plane from the Midwest to the East.
