    About the Book

    Edit

"It is a wonderfully interesting and little known trip, that of the steamer journey from San Francisco to Sacramento, capital of California, through the Bay of San Francisco and up the Sacramento River, one hundred and twenty-five miles in all, with at least four unique things per mile to see and to admire. Traveling in a modern steamboat of the Southern Pacific, with wide promenades, luxurious salons, and cozy staterooms, is also far more comfortable, if not as romantic, than trailing Dutch waterways in a canal-boat. There is not a dull moment on the trip. The beauty of the scenery is enhanced by the varied costumes of the river-folk and those who fish and those who travel by the waterway."

Relive an early 1900s steamboat ride experience from San Francisco’s Ferry Building to the ferry docks of Old Sacramento. Grab your $1 steamship ticket and let’s discover the “Netherlands Route" from San Francisco to Sacramento together.

    MicroPast
    Capitola, California 95010

MicroPast was founded in 2025 by Gordon van Zuiden. MicroPast focuses on the detailed study of small units of research, such as individual lives, specific businesses, unique locations or immersive travel adventures. These detailed micro history stories emphasize depth over breadth, providing a nuanced understanding of history and travel through rich, contextual analysis. Gordon founded Micropast based on the passion that he has to explore unique historical stories in places where he has lived, worked or travelled, especially Los Gatos, Capitola, San Francisco and Paris, France. These stories are the culmination of working with fellow historians, online research, and in person interviews - weaving together rich, detailed, unique stories about people and events that have rarely been brought to life.
