    About the Book

    Edit

This reflective report and personal dictionary documents a Master’s final project: a vernacular built body of work which explores the role that craft can awaken and realise in humans flourishing; both through the act of a craft practise and through use of craft objects themselves. Using endangered heritage techniques to produce three craftworks that encompass the found elements that are needed for human flourishing according to Desmet and Pohlmeyer’s Positive Design Framework.

Apphia Ferguson-Ross is a Wales-based craftswoman and photographer whose work documents her interest in the island cultures of the British Isles. She maintains a varied craft practice, working across woven grasswork and grasswork furniture, with a background in small metalsmithing, place-based jewellery, enamelling, and analogue photography. Her work explores the relationship between material, place and practical cultural practices, with a particular interest in island cultures. Her Master's research was led by questions concerning the correlation between craft and its necessity, and how both contribute to human flourishing. This culminated in a specialised practice of heritage grasswork, making from her surrounding vernacular and adapting heritage practices to contemporary needs.
