    About the Book

    Edit

Photographs of anonymous interventions to the fine art installation ANOTHER PLACE are the focus of this book.

They are organised along a subjective continuum beginning with love and ending with hate and grief. An essay exploring how and why the installation stimulates responses follows the images.

Sculptor Antony Gormley created ANOTHER PLACE. It consists of 100 cast-iron life-size replicas of his body. It has been permanently sited in England on Merseyside since 2007. His other works include ANGEL OF THE NORTH and the ONE & OTHER fourth plinth project in Trafalgar Square.

The ways in which people freely use the individual sculptures of ANOTHER PLACE to express themselves create striking images and metaphors. As the elements ravage the iron men, perhaps their transience and decay provoke intervention. Their placement too, not on plinths, but in beach sand, invites direct response. The life-sized, seemingly anonymous figures offer a blank canvas to the imagination. The source of impulses to make such alterations is rooted deeply in individual psychology, resulting in a wide range of reactions to the work.

Permanent changes to some of the figures are rather like tattoos, expressing the history of a particular body; high tides wash away temporary interventions of the day.
