About the Book
Working 'nights' in a Repro Print Studio near Old Street in the City of London in 2000 I would have a break in the early hours of the morning and wander the quiet streets taking photographs. These were made using an Olympus XA film-based compact camera, hand-held and with longish shutter speeds. I was pleased with the first results I obtained of the dimly lit, empty scenes: slightly unsharp but otherwise deceptively clear. Encouraged also by the cinematic, noirish feel the slight camera movement produced, I carried on photographing the surrounding areas: Paul St, Scrutton St, Leonard St, Worship St, Tabernacle St, Luke St, Rivington St, Shoreditch High St, Spitalfields, Gt Eastern St, Bonhill St, Charlotte St, Commercial St, Hoxton St, Kingsland Rd, amongst many others.
The sequence of photographs in this book follows the meandering of my nocturnal camera as it spiraled through the shades of the old city. I would be happy if the pictures, interacting together, somehow approximated my perception of the muffled night moves on this shadowy stage.
