About the Book
shot on 35mm by schmenna
"MUT" is an exploration of the beauty within the softness and femininity that Black womxn hold naturally in harmony with our strength + resilience, especially when connected with our roots.
named after the Kemetic (aka Egyptian) mother goddess, Mut, who was considered "the mother of everything in the world."
it is historically known that the human race originated in Africa over 200,000 years ago, which technically means that every single person on this planet, regardless of their ethnicity, has ancestry that traces back to a Black womxn. furthermore, so much of the culture, slang, creative elements, even social activism that we hold high and love today was birthed by Black womxn. therefore, the Black woman truly is literally and culturally the mother of everything.
however, the Black woman unfortunately is still one of the most disrespected and unprotected people in our global community, as we can see clearly from the fact that Breonna Taylor has still not received justice for her tragic murder by the police. or from the fact that Black womxn die at significantly higher rates from hospitalized child birth. or even the fact that so little Black womxn hold positions of power in the media, workforce or government.
this project serves as a form of resistance against those who perpetuate harmful biases and micro-aggressions against or simply do not respect or protect Black womxn of all forms, shapes, shades, textures, and personalities. it also serves as a celebration for all of the beautiful Black womxn in the world, whose existence alone is pure magic.
