About the Book
"Fletcher's" is a historical photodocumentary book depicting life past and present in the small fishing village of Margaree Harbour, Nova Scotia. The photographer/author Charles D. Winters is well known for his previously published documentary photography of family dairy farming in central New York ("Too Wet to Plow"), and life on the Navajo reservation at Canyon de Chelly, Arizona ("Crossing Between Worlds"). He describes his motivation in photographing this village store perched on the edge of the North Atlantic ocean as follows: "Fletcher's store is not only a place to buy a gallon of milk and a pound of nails but to collect your mail and to find out the goings on in the community. The worn threshold silently speaks of the many locals and folks 'from away' who have been greeted by three generations of Laurences since the store first opened around 1865".
