About the Book
The 1990s were a dark time. The decade started with a war in Iraq then a federal building was bombed (by an American). Law enforcement got really amped along with the overwhelming wave of broseph patriotism. The religious right was increasing political pressure on all kinds of issues. The AIDS/HIV epidemic was still raging, while those in charge were viewing it as a moral punishment not a health crisis. People lost their jobs, couldn’t find places to live, couldn’t marry their partners, couldn’t live openly gay and be part of the military. A lot of the history I see of this time period has a rainbow fabulousity filter that was not my experience. The gay world I moved through was goth, androgynous, punk, sexually ambivalent/experimental, horror themed, blood drenched, and scandalous. Way more Hellraiser than Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
