    About the Book

    Edit

This little book explores the question: What is truth?

Across seven chapters, this short examination of truth considers interesting edge cases and non-obvious implications of how our own intuitions of truth may surprise us. The book begins by exploring a number of potential definitions of truth, beginning with the simple idea that true things correspond to reality, and following through with more nuanced alternatives. How, for example, can we account for agreement on "facts" about Harry Potter? How can we think about the "truth" behind conventions, such as forks belonging to the left of a plate? Can we make room for a kind of "truth" of religions, knowing that they cannot possibly all be logically correct (and, in fact, may all be incorrect)?

Beyond proposing a specific definition for truth, the book outlines a simple model for thoughts, questions, and the motivations behind these. Ten key ideas, delineated as "observations" in the book, serve as mental milestones along the way. The tone is light and friendly — the book is intended for a general audience, although it does not shy away from challenging concepts.
