Considering herself a "free agent" (what others might call widowhood), Audrey travels extensively through South America, to Russia during the Cold War, in newly independent African countries where leaders recently had been kidnapped, overthrown or assassinated, and to explore Iran and Afghanistan -- including seeing up close the immense Buddhas of Bamiyan, later declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and more recently destroyed by the Taliban.
