    About the Book

    Edit

This is the most thorough presentation to date of the work of artist Jef Gunn. Written to coincide with an ambitious exhibit at the William Traver Gallery in Tacoma, Washington, the book (and the exhibit) shows an array of media attending to issues of interconnectedness and the inspirations of nature, especially the Northwest deserts, rivers and mountains.

Seth Thompson, professor of color photography at Photo Center Northwest in Seattle, Writes of Gunn's work: "I enjoy Jef Gunn's paintings the way I enjoy Bonnard's late work: We encounter fragments of matter and form that coalesce over time into presence of something inexplicable and alive. His paintings appear to present the World Soul in its states of immanence and being. We experience the purposeful order and beauty of a world that too often appears merely contingent, particular, and subjective."

    Jef Gunn
    Portland, Oregon, USA

Learned to paint in the 70s in Central California; moved back to the NW for the light and a crazy love for damp and darkness. Nowadays, I really rather like it on the East side of the state and I’m spending more time back in Hawai’i. Extended periods of study in both Barcelona and Paris in the 1980s had a strong hand in developing my methods of painting and understanding of art. All that has been leavened by attitudes and practices of pre-modern Asian art : Sung to Ming dynasties in China; Kamakura to Edo to Meiji periods in Japan. These painters were modern before the West knew what it meant.
