We don’t have this world tied to “masculinity”. Where I grew up, the adults say that men are not weak; we don’t cry or talk about how we feel. Machismo ran in our household. As a man, my father forbade me from helping my mother with any kind of chores. I cannot wash the dirty dishes piled at the sink or sweep the dust and cobwebs on the floors and crevices.
This word is not associated with the concept of masculinity, at least not where I grew up, back in El Salvador some decades ago, I was told that men don’t cry, men are not weak and we don’t talk about what we feel. Machismo was another member of the family, it was part of the routine during dinner while my mom was cooking and serving food to me and my dad. I was not allowed to help with the chores at home, because I was a man, and I was told men don’t wash dishes or clean the houses.
