About the Book
From east to west and since forever and a day the egg has been an important symbol in our world, most importantly of the almost incomprehensible start of life. So the mystery of the egg is still valid today, which is reason enough for ‘the egg’ to have occupied Jacques Meijer (1934) since he began the project in 1983. Fascination with this everyday yet oh-so-mysterious object has fired his imagination for more than 25 years. He has also helped beget the myth that egg plants can grow from washed up water eggs. Unfortunately there are no photos of the last known egg plant, as a new cleaning lady – so the story goes – threw the plant, in full bloom, into the bin because of its malodorousness. In his installation, ‘greenhouse with egg plant in bloom’, Meijer has found a way of visualising the mystery of the egg plant. In about 35 seconds the installation shows a chick being born – proof of the role of the water egg in evolutionary theyorie
