    About the Book

    Edit

An illustrated reference for antique needlepoint or applied beadwork - plus a glimpse into the lives of the women who created this art. The book introduces the history and use of the beadwork and can help determine the age, provenance, construction, and materials used for antique beadwork. Beadwork was an integral part of a young girl’s education in needle arts and decorating from 1750 through the late 1900s. Many women continued to produce this art for use around their house or to wear. With beadwork in the 1800s, women could master social graces, tap their creative spirit, compete gracefully, and keep their man happy.

    Lee Sigler
    San Francisco

As a world traveler for the computer industry, Lee Sigler has been a featured speaker from Tokyo to Brisbane and from Moscow to Johannesburg. While traveling, Lee has been able to collect antiques – particularly fiber arts. As a collector of antiques, Lee combines a serious side for researching with a creative side for photographing and writing about her collections. Lee has been indulging in fiber arts since she was eight and has a great appreciation for the women who have shared this passion over the centuries. For this book on beadwork, Lee has collected hundreds of examples of beadwork from the 1700s through the first half of the twentieth century and has one of the world’s largest private collections of women’s art – specifically, antique fiber art done with beads. This collection has provided the groundwork for researching the use of, the construction of, and the patterns for applied beadwork from the late 1700s through the 1800s.
