About the Book
People intervene in other people's lives every day, which fascinates me! It got me thinking about how unaware we are of the influence and impact people have on us when we let them into our lives, whether it be momentarily or over a period of time. I started wondering what it would be like if I forced these encounters by pushing the boundaries of personal space and planting the idea to hopefully change society's perception of interaction or at least make them question it.
Like most animals, humans have a certain air space around their bodies that they claim as their personal space. How far that personal space extends depends mainly on the density of the population in the place where he/she grew up and how close they are to the people frequently around them, such as parents, siblings, friends etc. So personal space can expand or contract depending on individual circumstances.
Whilst working on this project, I have been taking on the public and testing their tolerance of myself and the everyday stranger, focusing mainly on body language and reactions. I am currently exploring and discovering how the human body can become an intervention itself; like a live sculpture, momentarily intervening in daily life.
This book features the opinions, actions and reactions of unsuspecting people from the streets of New York, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
