    About the Book

    Edit

A few years ago I saw a unique appearing mannequin in a shop window and photographed it. Later, when looking at the picture, I would imagine the mannequin as human and the photograph as a candid image of a moment of life.

The expression and pose of a mannequin is unchanging but in the photograph they seemed to equal the expression and pose of a living person in a real event. There were reflections and lights in the window that in reality did change throughout the day but in the photograph became part of the permanent background, fixed in time and place. I liked the idea that in the photograph the “permanent”, the mannequin, appeared “fleeting” and the “fleeting”, the reflections and lights, became “permanent”.

Window displays exist to catch the eye. They are set up to be dramatic. They are like small stages and the mannequins are like actors. Of the shop window photographs I made, the ones I liked best resembled the still images made for theater productions, frozen moments of a larger story. The mannequins become cast members of their own stage play. They are “Window Actors”. The book's price is set by the printing company "Blurb" and is set "At Cost".
