    About the Book

    Edit

Through transcribed testimony Land Radius Fugue recounts the understanding of things by presenting dialogues centered around 60 days of activity on a small piece of North Uist’s common land. A salt marsh; an edge land, which hosts subtle and extraordinary colonies, such as Armeria Maritima’s tufts of pink foam, or the red deer that lurk and graze, moths, herons, otters and gulls, tracking weather patterns, and the surge of the tide as it overwhelms the land at the rising of the new moon. Running counter to these activities, told through human eyes, are stories of experience and stories of frustration at the unchecked increase in deer numbers, and protected status for marauding geese, land-raiding chronicles, the naturalist’s role, the scientist's knowledge and the artist’s eye.

Isle of North Uist, Outer Hebrides, UK

An environmental artist based in the Outer Hebrides, originally from London now living on the Isle of North Uist since 1990. I investigate bio-cultural links between people and the lands they inhabit.Interconnectedness of art, ecology, site and politics provides a rich framework for artistic and intellectual explorations, assisted by good agrarian knowledge gained through a life on the land. I am interested in ‘living as an act’ and how art expands ways to reflect and develop lived experience. As lives become increasingly encoded and intellectually based there are less and less opportunities to directly connect with the places where we live. Through dialogical processes of field research using methods such as interviewing, fieldwalking, and surveying via the photographic, videoed and drawn, I collect and present primary observations, aiming to trigger an understanding of connection and present experiences of living 'first hand', in touch with environment, community and self.
