About the Book
This is a catalog of 100 collages by artist Ray Beldner. The works, made traditionally with scissors and glue, are assembled from select parts of pictures found in art history books. Each collage has been paired with a poem fragment from the Greek lyric poet, Sappho, who lived during the 6th century BC.
Sappho wrote of love, yearning, reflection and, in the recovered fragments of her thoughts, Beldner sees a similarity to the fragment of shapes, colors and texture in his own art work. The collages are purposely abstracted, pared down just enough to suggest an open-ended narrative where viewers can extrapolate their own meanings.
