    About the Book

    Edit

Joana Schlutter presents a visual portrayal of how those who suffer from depression feel. Even though people with depression may be temporarily closed off to the experience of beauty they may wish to be able to find the strength to engage with nature – to see the field of flowers, connect with people, listen to people, and listen to the ripple of water in a stream. But for the moment they see, as if through a veil. This is conveyed in the images presented. The motifs are distorted, abstract even and represent the internal state of mind of victims of depression. This also conveys the disjuncture between the outside of things, where everything appears to be fine. But appearances are deceptive, a fact we realize as we look behind the surface reality. The photography employs Expressionism, which seeks to explore the complex surfaces and textures of life.
