    About the Book

    Edit

When we think of progress we generally imagine it in a literary context. We envision development. A process of moving forward and achieving a more advanced or tranquil state. This notion therefore makes progress a positive act but in the society we live in today can we maintain the same ideals and apply the same meanings to such a simple word. The images in this book are taken from the viewpoints of eight photographers, all of whom have challenged their and society’s opinions of what progress means and how it effects us. The work ranges in style and approach. Some photographers have concentrated on the effects of urban development and the sacrifices made to move into the modern age. There is also work focusing on the effects of the current financial crises. On the other side of the spectrum there are images concerned with the psychological connotations of progression., the dependence that development has on memory and the process of recovery following an injury or accident. When looking through this book it becomes apparent that progress is not a simple idea. It challenges what we believe development to be and what we must sacrifice and leave behind to achieve the things we want and need. This affects all of us on a personal level and as a society and at such a strange and difficult time we must now decide where we want to go from here.
