    About the Book

    Edit

Book Editors: Megan Esopenko & Mary Hicks.

Nissology [noun] is the study of islands.

This is a collection of mapping and design work produced by fourteen designers at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto under the instruction of Assistant Professors Fadi Masoud & Fionn Byrne.

Nissological Codes tests the projection of novel coding systems onto what this volume will refer to as the “Third Condition” – a constantly in flux hydrological state that is neither wet nor dry, but always shifting. The propositions represented in this volume are located throughout the Florida Keys, a landscape of extreme variability and vulnerability and a relevant case study for the deployment of novel, contextual and responsive land use codes. The fourteen projects are organized along a hydrological gradient from dry to wet, which is visually represented as a gradient of blues from light to dark, each one indicating the physical location of a project. These locations include inland areas, shorelines and reefs off shore of the Florida Keys.
