    About the Book

    Edit

Founded in 1965 by Ken Woolard, the "Cambridge Folk Festival" has become one of the World's longest running annual music festivals.

The list of performers to have trodden the stages at Cambridge encompasses an enormous, eclectic reflection of musical style both contemporary and traditional. From Paul Simon to Robert Plant, Ry Cooder to Elvis Costello, the range of music is, at the very least, to be described as impressive.

In 1995 the Festival organization asked Colin if he would document the festival in his unique photographic style. These pages contain a few of the many images he made over a six year period.

COLIN TURNER IS A PHOTOGRAPHER LIVING AND WORKING FROM HIS STUDIO IN A CONVERTED CHAPEL IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE. "THE INTRODUCTION OF DIGITAL PROCESSES HAS ENHANCED THE RANGE FOR IMAGERS. PHOTOGRAPHERS HAVE ANOTHER BASE FOR EXPRESSION EMBRACING COMPLEX AND EXCITING SOFTWARE - EITHER EMPLOYING THESE TECHNOLOGIES DIRECTLY OR IN COMBINATION WITH CONVENTIONAL ANALOGUE MATERIALS AND SKILLS AS COMMISSIONS DEMAND AND ALLOW. THE DIGITAL WORLD IS ALSO THERE FOR IMAGERS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY HAD NO EXPERIENCE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S ALCHEMY. AS WELL AS A SOPHISTICATED DIGITAL DARKROOM, I MAINTAIN A LARGE FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHIC LABORATORY IN MY STUDIO AND WILL CONTINUE TO ENJOY PRODUCING THE UNRIVALLED CAPABILITIES OF FILM AND WET PRINTING. UNDERSTANDING LIGHT AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF EXPRESSION USING PHOTOGRAPHY REMAINS THE SAME."
