Throughout the course of one day how much trash do we produce? The average amount of trash created by the average American in one day is estimated to be around 4.4 pounds which is 1,606 pounds per year. As humans living in an almost totally disposable world, we use so many resources that put strain on our infrastructure, and cause irreversible damage to the planet. Our consumption and the indifference we have towards objects in our lives are to blame for this. However, we should also take a look at our first world capitalist society, and how that has propagated this message.
In this photographic project, disposable objects are transformed from something wasteful, to something sculptural. My goal is to give purpose to these objects that are meant to be disposed of. It can exist in a space where I can create a narrative out of it or make it aesthetically pleasing to look at through the use of composition, line and color. Both Irving Penn and Edward Weston create still lives out of objects found in everyday life and have been inspirational to my work. However I am focusing more on the environmental impact while simultaneously trying to make these images beautiful. My goal is not to turn people into ecowarriors that tie themselves to trees but just to make you realize the volume of what our disposable culture has perpetuated for so long.
