About the Book
The photographs contained in the Writing on the Wall: Chicago Brick and Mortar are images taken across the city between 2005 and 2007. These are images of advertisements painted on the sides of typical Chicago brick buildings. Some are more legible than others. Some of the ads date back well over a hundred years. They appear, in many cases, as fragments of words, remnants of paint still clinging to the brick. The work is a kind of artistic urban archeology, a combination of the aesthetic appeal and the historical curiosity they inspire.
